Yeast From A Conical

Post by Reignman »

I am a long time Conical owner, but haven't used any yeast from it since I always over build my starters. My yeast starter froze in my fridge when it just started to freeze everything. I tossed it out and now I have to use yeast from my current fermenting lager. When I save the yeast after I keg it, what about all the gunk that sticks to the sides at the bottom of the cone? Do I want any of that?

Cheers,

Reignman

No, you should try to wash the yeast. There are some youtube videos.

I have been reading that it is better to not wash your yeast.

Washing yeast is unnessisary and a potential infection risk. Unless you are going from something with a really strong character (stout/IPA/etc) into something very mild (blond/light lager) the risk of flavour carryover is nil.

I do over build. I quit ordering liquid yeast as it is taking too long to get here. I used 34/70 this time.

I've never washed yeast before reusing. No issues.
