First Extract

Post by Sixstring78 » 8 years ago

Ok, I just finished my first extract brew. Sanitized everything with B-Brite for 30 min before use.
I pretty much followed the directions on the kit except for one area.
The kit said 23L of water, but my carboy would only hold 19L(leaving about 2 1/2 inches before it reaches the airlock). Maybe next time I should just use a bucket to ferment so I can add the proper amount of water. I assume this beer will come out richer with a bit of a burnt flavor, and have slightly higher alcohol content since I used the prescribed amount of sugar.
The OG was 1.042 so I'm hoping that is somewhat normal.
It is being stored at approx. 66-67F.

Is there something better then regular granulated white sugar to use like the kits asks for?
Wanting to try another couple extract kits while I gather/build my equipment to go all-grain.

The bucket fermenter is the best bet for your volume issue. You will probably get at best a 4%abv on this batch. What was the og supposed to be? Thumbs up on planning to going all grain!

It didn't say what the OG was supposed to be.
But from what I've read, anywhere between 1.040-1.050 is normal.

Sounds like a bit higher alcohol content. This amount is within tolerance of the kits proven specs.

Munton's actually says that you can throw in an extra spray malt pack to boost the alcohol, while improving the flavour profile...
